( W x L + 2W x C )
(W + D) (W + D)
A =

x 100

( L + d + 2( W + d ) )

A =   Percent of Open Area
W =   Width of Slot Opening
L =   Length of Slot Opening
C =   Length of Cluster Opening
D =   Warp Wire Diameter
d =   Shoot Wire Diameter

EXAMPLE 1
Assume the following:
Slot opening width = 3/4"  Slot opening length = 5"  Cluster opening length = 3/4"
Warp wire diameter = 0.244"  Shoot wire diameter = 0.244"
The above formula requires that all fractions of one inch must first be converted into their decimal equivalents therefore:
The cluster opening length of 3/4" = 3 divided by 4 = 0.75"

1   Multiply Slot length by the slot width 5.0 x 0.75 = 3.75
2   Add the slot width to the warp wire diameter 0.75 + 0.244 = 0.994
3   Divide the answer from step 1 by step 2 3.750 / 0.994 = 3.773
4   Multiply the slot width by 2 0.75 x 2 = 1.5
5   Multiple the answer from step 4 by the cluster length 1.5 x 0.75 = 1.125
6   Add the slot width to the warp wire diameter 0.75 + 0.244 = 0.994
7   Divide the answer from step 5 by step 6 1.125 / 0.994 = 1.132
8   Add the answers from step 3 and step 7 3.773 + 1.132 = 4.905
9   Add the slot width and shoot wire diameter 0.75 + 0.244 = 0.994
10   Multiply the answer from step 9 by 2 0.994 x 2 = 1.988
11   Add the slot length, shoot wire diameter, and step 10  5 + 0.244 + 1.988 = 7.232
12   Divide the answer from step 8 by step 11 4.905 / 7.232 = 0.678
13   Multiply step 12 by 100 to express as a percentage 0.678 x 100 = 67.8%
