How to Compute Screen Module % Of Open Area

Full Version

Step 1:    Determine the total area of the screen module

Module Area  =   Module Width (inches) x Module Length (inches)

Example 1
A module that is 12" x 12"  has a total surface area of 144 square inches.
or,
A module that is 12" x 24" has a total surface area of 288 square inches.

Step 2:    Determine the individual aperature (opening) area

 Individual

Aperture Area  =

Aperture Width (inches) x Aperture Length (inches)

Example 2
An aperture of 7/32" x 7/32" (0.21875" x 0.21875") has an area of 0.0478 square inches
or,
An aperture opening of 1/8" x 1/2" (0.125" x 0.500") has an area of 0.625 square inches

Step 3:    Determine the total number of apertures
Example 3
A module with 28 rows across the width and 60 rows across the length (28 x 60)
has a total of 1680 apertures

Step 4:   Determine the total area of aperture openings

Total

Aperture Area  =   Number of Apertures x Individual Aperture Area

Example 4
A module with a total 1680 apertures, each with an area of 0.0475 square inches
has a total aperture opening area of 79.8 square inches

1680

  Apertures

  x 0.0475

  Square Inches per Aperture

79.80

Square Inches Total Area of Openings

Step 5:   Determine the Percentage of Open Area

Total Area of Openings
 % Open Area  =
  Total Area Of Module
Example 5
A 12" x 24" module having a total area of 288 Square Inches and a total opening area of 79.80 Square Inches has a 27.7% Useable Open Area

  79.80 Square Inches

÷

288 Square Inches  =    27.7% Useable Open Area
